Podcast – The Future of Architecture – Talk #4: Food for Thought

The phrase ‘Food for Thought’ has connotations to feeding the mind with stimulating information; it is also the aptly titled winning entry by Niall Patrick Walsh into the TUBE 8x8x300 Conceptual Design competition. Through a thought provoking discussion with the Bubbles Platform founder and architectural writer, we will be discussing the broader topic of how architects can contribute to food consumption awareness and potentially explore the economic value of the ‘agritectural’ industry:

About the Guest:
Niall Patrick Walsh is making the world a better place- word by word. He has set out on a journey to uncover architecture’s links to the global flows that govern the modern world – be they food, energy, water, people or ideas. A graduate of Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland, Niall has explored the partnership of Food and Architecture across multiple projects including his work for ArchDaily and Archinect, his Master’s Thesis ‘You Are What You Eat’ and the competition entry ‘Food for Thought’ which was awarded the first prize at the International Tube 8x8x300 Contest in China in 2020. He has written and edited over a thousand articles for ArchDaily, and Architecture Ireland (RIAI Journal), co-founded the Bubble Futures Platform and currently works as an Architectural Designer at Building Design Partnership at Dublin, Ireland, and as a contributing writer at Archinect.

  2. What do you think might be a sensible solution to reducing the perception of far-removed food sources?
  3. Could you elaborate on how you feel about a marriage between architecture and agriculture as a viable path within the field – perhaps creating a sub-discipline – an agritecture – in some respect?
  4. In your opinion, what do you think the future of architecture holds – and how can this be achieved?
