New milestone for Mt Derrimut Road project

Two steel bridges have been lifted into place marking a major milestone on the Mt Derrimut Road project in Melbourne’s West. 

 The project is expected to remove the dangerous and congested level crossing at Mt Derrimut Road in April, more than a year ahead of schedule. 

 The 208-tonne steel bridges span 45-metres across Mt Derrimut Road, linking the twin rail tracks above one of western Melbourne’s busiest arterial roads. 

 A 650-tonne crane carried out the lifts and installation onto concrete columns that will support the bridges. The steel bridges were transported to Deer Park from Corio, where they are manufactured.

The project follows the Fitzgerald Road level crossing removal which began in July 2021. Once completed, the three major construction works at Fitzgerald Road, Robinsons Road, and Mt Derrimut Road combined will make the Geelong and Ballarat lines level crossing-free between Deer Park and the city. 

Removing the level crossing is expected to ease delays for the estimated 23,000 vehicles that pass through the crossing every day, where boom gates can be down for up to 60 per cent of the morning peak. 

 The west Melbourne project is being delivered by an alliance comprising Fulton Hogan, Metro Trains Melbourne and the Level Crossing Removal Project.
