The Mt Derrimut Road boom gates have been removed ahead of the new Deer Park Station opening on Monday 24 April 2023, in Melbourne’s west.

Removing the boom gates is one of several major milestones reached during the works in the rail corridor that began on Monday 10 April and will continue until last train Sunday 23 April.

The removal comes as part of the new Deer Park station and rail bridge construction under Victoria’s Big Build.

Crews have also demolished the former Deer Park Station, laid new train tracks and are continuing work on the new station buildings and elevated platforms in preparation for station opening.

Train services will resume from Monday 24 April, with trains stopping at the new Deer Park Station. Buses will continue to replace trains on sections of the Geelong and Warrnambool lines until Wednesday 3 May while V/Line completes critical maintenance work.

Temporary platform access arrangements will be in place while crews continue work on the station buildings, lifts, and ramps.

Work will continue until late 2023 on the new station and precinct, which includes a new bus interchange, 150 new and upgraded car parks, landscaping and pedestrian and cyclist paths.

The Mt Derrimut Road boom gates were down for up to 60 per cent of the morning peak, delaying some of the 23,000 vehicles that pass through each day.

Removing the level crossing and building the new Deer Park Station is expected to reduce congestion and create a safer, better-connected Deer Park.
