Movers and shakers: Biggest construction and engineering appointments in May 2023

Last month saw Turner & Townsend make senior appointments around the globe and Arcadis refresh its executive leadership team, while many other new appointments were made around the UK construction sector.

A round up of the biggest moves and appointments during May follows below. To feature on next month’s appointments roundup email robert.hakimian@emap.com.

Turner & Townsend strengthens senior teams in UK, Asia and Australia and New Zealand

Turner & Townsend has appointed James Corrigan as its new UK managing director of infrastructure, Simon Arnold as its new UK managing director of real estate project management and Andy Scott as the newly-created UK managing director for defence.

Corrigan has been with Truner & Townsend since joining as a graduate in 2005. He has worked his way up through the business and most recently headed up the UK programme advisory division, growing it from a team of 40 to 130. As UK managing director of infrastructure, he will take responsibility for all business services across the UK infrastructure market, including a particular focus on driving digitalisation in the infrastructure sector.

Arnold has been with the company for seven years, leading the project management side of the business across London and the South East, which doubled in size under his tenure.

Turner & Townsend’s first UK managing director for defence, Andy Scott, has been with the company since 2011 and will be leading the growth of the business’ defence footprint with a focus on improving productivity and establishing best in class delivery models for the UK’s defence programmes.

Meanwhile, Turner & Townsend in Asia has appointed Brian Shuptrine as its new managing director. He steps up from head of real estate, Asia, and will now take responsibility for the firm’s strategic direction in the region across the real estate, infrastructure and natural resources sectors. He joined Turner & Townsend in 2006 and has worked in Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, helping to drive the business’ growth in Asia. He has recently overseen the growth of the firm’s market leading position in both data centres and portfolio management in Asia, while cultivating local industry expertise across all sectors and markets in which it operates.

Lastly, Darren Munton has been made Turner & Townsend Australia and New Zealand managing director. He has been with the business for 15 years and has held various senior positions in the real estate sector before serving as head of infrastructure for the region.

Arcadis promotes trio to executive leadership team

Three global business area leaders have been promoted to Arcadis’ executive leadership team. These are global president for places Mark Cowlard, global president for resilience Heather Polinsky and global president for nobility Greg Steele. The changes follow the recent appointment of Alan Brookes as chief executive officer, and underline Arcadis’ ambition to bring its global leaders even closer to the business to help better serve client needs, step up cross GBA collaboration and drive greater cross-border efficiencies.

Cowlard was formerly chief executive of Atkins UK and since becoming leader of the Places business has focused on creating smart and sustainable places for owners, investors, users, and communities.

Polinsky has previously been Arcadis chief operating officer in North America and her current role as global lead for resilience places her well to build on the business’ heritage and expertise in energy transition, water management and environmental remediation to help clients create a more resilient future.

Steele has previously been Arcadis executive leadership team member for Asia and the Pacific region and having headed up the Mobility business since early 2022 he is now focused on working closely with transport owners, operators, and contractors to deliver greener and cleaner design, asset and program management and new mobility solutions across the world.

Meanwhile, Edel Christie has been appointed as Arcadis chief growth officer following on from the retirement of Mary Ann Hopkins. Christie has been with the business for 25 years, most recently as chief transformation officer.

Atkins rail lead joins RIA

The Railway Industry Association (RIA), the voice of the UK rail supply community, has appointed Atkins market director for strategic rail Colette Carroll to its board. In this role, Carroll will play a key role in RIA’s strategic governance and direction. She was awarded an OBE for services to the rail industry in 2013 and brings over 20 years of senior experience to the role, including jobs at HS2, the Land and Property Director and in government.

Systra double senior hire bolsters UK and Ireland business

Systra has made two senior appointment to support its ambition of sustainable growth in the UK and Ireland.

Llewelyn Morgan has been appointed as head of innovation, where he will lead and develop new ideas, technology and methods of working. He joins from Oxford County Council, whrere he was head of innovation and led an award-winning cross-departmental team that undertook many InnovateUK and government funded projects covering transport, energy, social care, health and the environment.

The other new face is Peter Weldon, who is now Systra director of net zero transport and will lead the delivery of transport decarbonisation projects and assist clients in their net zero transport transition. He joins from engineering and professional services firm GHD where he was business development lead for transport decarbonisation projects, developing business for both public and private sector clients.

Galliford Try grows highways business

Julie Crawford has been appointed as national highways director at Galliford Try. She will be responsible for the group’s strategic relationship with National Highways, ensuring that it remains aligned with the roads operator’s key priorities and objectives. Crawford has spent over 15 years in programme management operations and developing and implementing strategic, policies, plans and roadmaps to drive organisational performance. She joins from HS2 and has previously held senior roles at National Highways under its former name of Highways England.

ITS UK bags Motts boss as new chair

Intelligent Transport Systems UK (ITS UK), the voice of the transport technology industry, has appointed Mott MacDonald head of ITS service Stuart Scott as its new chair. Scott has set out his key priorities as promoting the need to better integrate the transport network, across road, rail, bus, active travel and micro-mobility, as well as the importance of ITS UK in representing the sector to policy makers.

Skanska gets new building services MD

Dan Williams has been appointed as managing director of Skanska UK’s building services operating unit, which specialises in facilities management and mechanical, electrical and public health (MEP) engineering. He moves over from his current role as operations director and he has previously held a number of senior roles in the MEP side of Skanska since joining in 2001.

Aecom boss appointed as construction charity trustee

Crash, the construction industry’s charity, has announced that Aecom Buildings and Places global chief executive Richard Whitehead has been appointed as trustee. Aecom has been a corporate patron of Crash since 2003, underpinning every construction project it delivers for homelessness charities and hospices around the UK. Whitehead has 30 years of industry experience that he will bring to the role.

Tilbury Douglas appoints new regional director

Chris Edmonds has been appointed as Tilbury Douglas’ new regional director for South Wales. Edmonds has been with the business since 2006 and has progressed through a variety of senior roles, most recently as regional operations director for South Wales. His career has also seen him lead Tilbury Douglas’ £130M refurbishment of Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.

Edmonds’ promotion follows the retirement of Carl Read, who worked at Tilbury Douglas gor almost 40 years, having started his career as a general building operative in 1983.

Ramboll double boosts sustainable buildings expertise

Ramboll has promoted a new executive director for buildings and a new head of building structures to help drive the continued growth of its expertise in delivering sustainable buildings.

Jason Layfield is promoted to executive director of buildings for the UK after 22 years at Ramboll. He joined as assistant engineer in 2001 and has since headed up several teams and regions, delivering on complex and challenging projects across the world in the energy, defence, marine and heritage sectors.

After 17 years at Atkins, Jules Handy has been appointed as Ramboll head of buildings structures. In her previous experience, she worked across a range of sectors including manufacturing and industrial, education, commercial, tourism, residential, aviation, defence, and transportation.

New CEO for Open ECX

Digital construction solution specialist Open ECX has announced that Nathan Ollier is its new chief executive officer. Ollier will be in charge of driving growth in the business as it looks to expand beyond construction and into adjacent sectors in the supply chain while reinforcing the brand’s leading presence in the construction and manufacturing sectors. He joins from enterprise software solutions provider Advanced and his previous experience includes leading the operations of Kirona Solutions, which was acquired by Advanced in 2019, where he was chief operating officer, before taking the lead as vice president, finance and spend management solutions at Advanced.

New vice president for Cowi in North America

Troy Tambay has taken up the position vice president for Cowi in North America’s programme and construction management group. He is a registered professional civil engineer in the states of California and Texas and has a wealth of experience in design management and construction management of major transport infrastructure projects. He joins Cowi from an international engineering firm where he was vice president of program and construction management.

Commercial director appointed at Roger Bullivant

Ground engineering firm Roger Bullivant has appointed Stuart Donovan as its new commercial director. He has over 25 years’ of experience in commercial management and construction law, having worked in the UK, South Africa, UAE, Malaysia and Australia. Prior to this appointment, he worked at Solvera Contract Management where he was director, providing commercial and contract support across various infrastructure and building projects.

EngineeringUK appoints new director of engagement programmes

Maddie Dinwoodie will join EngineeringUK as its new director of engagement programmes from 1 July. She is currently chief programme officer at UK Youth and has spent over two decades developing programmes for young people, growing partnerships and improving impact and joins the not-for-profit as it embarks on its new five year plan to encourage the engineers of tomorrow.

Waterman boosts Drims development with new appointment

Multi-disciplinary consultancy Waterman has hired John Swift to its Glasgow team as associate director, placing him in a leading role in the development of its nationwide Drims (Dynamic Response Intelligent Monitoring) offering. Drims is a smartphone-based road monitoring system for effective road condition evaluation. Swift has spent over two decades in highways, most recently as head of business development for Gaist Solutions, where he worked with local authorities to develop strategic planning and development improvements.

Hardies hires head of principal designer services

Property and construction consultants Hardies has appointed Ewan Wyllie as its head of principal design services. He has worked in construction health and safety for over 18 years and has a a track record spanning a variety of sectors, project size and complexity.
