The original Foster + Partners-designed building began construction works in 1999 and has stood as HSBC’s headquarters since it opened in 2002 – but the bank is now in the process of relocating to the City of London.
The project to reimagine and update the tower is being led by Canary Wharf Group (@canarywharflondon) and backed by the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) with architecture by @kohnpedersenfox.
In a statement Shobi Khan, CEO of Canary Wharf Group, said: “We look forward to working with QIA on 8 Canada Square to deliver a building of outstanding design, engineering and sustainability standards. This redevelopment is another step in Canary Wharf’s evolution into a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood offering workspace, retail, homes, leisure and amenities all in one location – a true 15-minute city.”
Works are due to start in 2027.
